Museums at 18th & Vine

Kansas City, MO

The Museums at 18th and Vine were created as part of an effort to revitalize what had been one of the city's grandest and most vibrant neighborhoods. The old El Capitan building remained abandoned and deteriorated. The museums were created from the remnants of this building, which serves as the Jazz Museum. The project included the restoration and interior detailing of he land-marked El Capitan building which houses the complex's Jazz Club and Jazz Museum components and the Museum's administrative offices. The exhibits throughout the building were coordinated to involve the visitor with the history of the area. As consultants to the prime architect, studies of the overall site were developed and detailing of the new portion of the complex, which will house the Negro Baseball Museum and grand lobby.
